Art of India for Kids

Take students on a colorful journey through the rich artistic traditions of India with this engaging art history lesson. Students explore a variety of Indian art forms, discover how artists use pattern, symbolism, and storytelling, and learn how art is woven into daily life, celebrations, architecture, and cultural traditions. Along the way, they’ll encounter vibrant folk art, magnificent temples, famous landmarks, and beautiful works of art that have inspired generations.
The lesson introduces students to Madhubani folk art, Indian miniature paintings, Rangoli designs, henna (Mehndi), sacred symbolism, Shiva as Nataraja, the Taj Mahal, Meenakshi Temple, and the Lotus Temple. Children learn why elephants are important symbols in Indian art and discover how artists use color, pattern, and decorative details to tell stories and express ideas.
Students finish the lesson by creating their own Madhubani-inspired elephant artwork using one of several included elephant templates. Two flexible project options, step-by-step instructions, supply lists, discussion questions, and student examples make this resource easy to adapt for a variety of ages, classroom settings, and available art materials. The result is a meaningful combination of world cultures, art history, and hands-on creativity.
