Medieval Art History Projects

Medieval Art History Projects invite students to explore the fascinating art and visual culture of the Middle Ages through authentic historical references and 12 creative projects. Students explore heraldry, knights and armor, Medieval fashion, illuminated manuscripts, bestiaries, castles, stained glass, gargoyles, grotesques, and Gothic architecture while discovering how art was used to tell stories, communicate ideas, decorate important objects, and transform Medieval buildings.

Each project begins with kid-friendly historical information, art vocabulary, and authentic examples of Medieval artworks, manuscripts, objects, or architecture. Students then use what they observe to create their own Medieval-inspired designs, including a shield, knight, knight’s horse, noblewoman, nobleman, illuminated manuscript, bestiary creature, castle, stained glass window, gargoyle, grotesque, and Gothic cathedral façade. The worksheets provide plenty of visual inspiration and design choices while leaving room for students to develop their own ideas.

This 40-page printable resource combines art history, observation, drawing, and creative design in one flexible collection.
