Surrealism Art Project

Surrealism Art Project turns four random ideas into one imaginative and completely original artwork. Students choose one Object, Animal, Action, and Place Mystery Card, then find a creative way to combine all four prompts into a single Surrealist scene. With millions of possible combinations, every drawing can take a completely different direction while encouraging imagination, problem-solving, and creative thinking.
Students are introduced to Surrealism through a short art history introduction, an engaging Salvador Dalí-inspired imagination hook, and a carefully selected list of Surrealist artworks to explore. They learn how artists transformed familiar objects, animals, people, and places through unexpected combinations, exaggerated scale, impossible situations, and dreamlike ideas before experimenting with those concepts in their own artwork.
The project includes 216 printable Mystery Cards divided into four color-coded categories, printable container labels, a Surrealist Artwork Entry Form, student artwork examples, a Surrealism display sign, teacher instructions, group-size tips, and extension ideas. The activity requires very few materials and can be adapted for an individual student, a small group, a classroom, or a very large group. Students can work with whatever drawing and coloring materials are already available, making this an easy-to-adapt art project for a wide range of settings.
