Medieval Bestiary Art History Lesson

Medieval Bestiary Art History Lesson takes students into the wonderfully weird world of Medieval beasts, fantastic creatures, and mysterious legendary peoples. Students explore authentic Medieval manuscripts and historical artworks while meeting 13 unforgettable creatures. Kid-friendly explanations, surprising Crazy Facts, and Look Closely at the Art prompts make the history fascinating, approachable, and genuinely fun.
Along the way, students discover that many creatures associated with Medieval art actually have much older origins. Stories travelled through ancient Greek and Roman writings, Medieval books, travel accounts, manuscripts, and works of art, changing as they were copied and retold. Students see how artists interpreted descriptions of creatures they had never seen and compare the wonderfully different results. The lesson turns Medieval art history into a mystery of imagination, storytelling, and artistic interpretation rather than simply a collection of dates and facts.
After exploring the historical artwork, students create an original Medieval beast of their own. They combine different animals, add impossible features or abilities, invent a habitat and meaning, and finish their creature with a Crazy Fact before completing their own Medieval Bestiary Entry. The creative project is intentionally open-ended, and can be completed with drawing, painting, collage, mixed media, sculpture, or other available art materials.
